What is Kung Fu?

Although Kung Fu has been popularized in Western entertainment and media, the term Kung Fu is actually used to describe a wide variety of Chinese martial arts. In fact, there are more than 400 styles of Kung Fu that are known to exist today.

One of the most well-known styles is that of Shaolin Kung Fu which originated with the Shaolin monks of China. Shaolin Kung Fu emphasizes the balance between Yin and Yang and is guided by a unique set of principles. The most vital principle is “The Six Coordinations”:

  1. Hands with the feet
  2. Knees with the elbows
  3. Shoulders with the hips
  4. Mind with the intent
  5. Intent with Qi
  6. Qi with the physical strength

In Chinese, Kung Fu refers to anything that requires great learning and practice. Students of Kung Fu learn a variety of kicks, blocks and strikes, and sometimes throws and locks, to defend themselves against an attack. The primary goal of Kung Fu training is to achieve balance and harmony between the mind, body and physical surroundings. Because of this mind-body connection, Kung Fu is one of the most visually stunning styles of martial arts.

My son has been practicing at SwiftKick Martial Arts for about two years. We have been nothing but pleased with the level of instruction, the professionalism of the teachers and staff, and the difference it has made in our son's life. My 5 year old and 8 year old started at SwiftKick about a year ago and have loved it. I have watched them become more focused, gain strength and coordination and have fun doing it! Our oldest daughter has been a part of Swiftkick for 4 years and she loves it. It has given her tons of confidence and let her grow as a leader. Our family loves SwiftKick! We have been going to SwiftKick for two years and we have loved every class and event.
